Creating a Website? Here is Your Checklist

Your Website Checklist

Many people I’ve spoken to recently are thinking of redesigning their website at the moment, courtesy lockdown. I agree. There’s no better time to do it and while there are many things that one must think of when they are working on a website, these are a few things that stood out for me that I wanted to share with you!

1. Domain & Hosting

Pick a domain name that you like and is in sync with your brand. Register it and then look at your various hosting options. Do you want to host with the provider you bought your domain from or would you rather host somewhere else?

2. Content

Make sure you know what content you want on your site. Do a wireframe that shows the flow of the site that makes it easier to plan what you want on there. How many pages will there be, will you have a blog section or a gallery, etc. are all aspects to consider.

3. User Experience

While planning your content, definitely think about the user experience, does it flow? Do your homework and check out other sites. Make a list of what you like and don't like.

4. Language

Apart from the website being easy to flow through, it also needs to read well. Don’t try and overcomplicate things or try to sound too professional. Keep it simple so that the message is delivered. Copy tip: Highlight benefits and don’t just list out features!

5. DIY or Professional

There are two ways to go about the website build, you can either do it yourself using Wix, Wordpress, or Squarespace (these also provide hosting options) or you can hire a professional (like me) to get it done for you. My recommendation would be exploring both the options and then deciding.

6. Mobile Responsive

A mobile responsive site in today’s world is a requirement and not just a nice to have. Search engines like Google will not let your site rank high if it is not mobile responsive.

Make sure you know what your site looks like on a mobile as that will impact user experience as well. Text should be legible, images with text should be readable and again, the flow must be good.

7. Analytics

Last, but not the least is your analytics. What’s the point of going through all that effort to build the site and then not tracking how many people are visiting it? While website builders will provide you with analytics, I personally would always recommend adding in some Google Analytics tracking.
