SEO Fundamentals

SEO Fundamentals

Search Engine Optimisation, otherwise known as SEO, is crucial for increasing your traffic. The main aim of SEO is to ensure that your website is found by search engines. In doing this, you’re also ensuring that your user gets a smooth experience when they visit your site.

Whilst one may not want to get into the nitty gritties about SEO, as that is a touch bit more complicated, there are a few fundamental tips that you can implement to improve your SEO.

1. Title Tags

A title tag is the text that is located on the browser or tab telling you what that page is about. For example, on our blog post, you’ll see the title of this post.

It is what shows up on the search engine's results page and can determine whether or not someone clicks on the link to the page or not.

2. Link Structure

Make your URLs short and easy to read. Think about it this way, if a human can’t read it, how can a search engine? Use hyphens to separate out words, have a format, add keywords if possible, and if there are any changes to the URL, then use 301 redirects to let Google know so that they still like you.

3. Headers (<h1> to <h6> tags)

Header tags is what search engines scan when crawling through a site’s content. Therefore, using these tags is wise for your headers. Don’t forget to put your keywords in them!

4. Image Alt Tags

Search engine spiders can’t read text on an image, hence, using alt tags that describe the image is a good policy. Not only does it describe the image if someone doesn’t have it downloaded, it also tells search engines what the image is about.

5. Site Maps

Including a site map on your website is another easy tick on the SEO checklist. Site maps make it easy for search engine spiders and humans to go through all that your website has to offer.

6. Mobile Optimisation

After Google updated their algorithm, a mobile friendly site will rank higher than a non-optimised site. If your website is not optimised for mobiles, chances are high that it’s rankings on Google will get affected.

7. Meta Descriptions & Meta Keywords

Meta descriptions and keywords are found in the HTML head section of the code.

Meta descriptions are used as the text below search engine results. A tailored description that explains the content on your page can improve your click-through rates.

Meta keywords refer to the keywords that describe the content on your page. Though not as important as they used to be, it’s best to continue using them. Be sure not to overdo it and not to repeat keywords. Search engines don’t like this. That's a massive no-no.

8. Content - Good & Continuous

Last but definitely not the least, is content. We’ve spoken about content marketing in our last few posts and now we’ll tell you why it’s important from an SEO standpoint.

Search engines crawl through every piece of content to find relevant pieces that match or answer the search term, phrase, or question. Therefore, the truer and descriptive your content is, the higher you will rank. Updating your site with new content is also very important – whether it’s a blog, a press release or even a forum.

These are a few SEO fundamentals to get you started. Make sure the basics are covered when it comes to search engine optimisation.
