Staying Productive When You Work From Home

Staying productive when you work from home

Now I know there must be a bunch of articles about how to stay productive when you work from home. Especially given most of the world is working from home at the moment (#CoVidTimes), it is important to make sure that you stay productive.

I am a big believer in that it’s not about the number of hours you work, but the amount of work you have managed to complete. As I have been working from home ever since I started my business, I thought I would share what actually works for me instead of giving you a list of things that I have not tried or what I think might help.

1. Dress like you’re going to work

So I must confess, I don’t do this on a daily basis, but on days that I do make that effort, I definitely find that I am able to focus more and feel more driven.

2. Have a workspace that is not in the same space you relax

Having a desk or a space to work in which is not the same space as where you have your me time or where you tend to relax is important. It also makes you feel like when you’re there, you’re there for work and so you find it easier to be productive.

3. Don’t force it

Now this may not be useful for everyone but definitely applies to those who have a more flexible schedule. If you know you are not able to focus at a certain time (for me it’s post lunch) then don’t force yourself to sit in front of your laptop and work. You won’t get much done.

What I would find is that if in that time, I step out for about an hour, then when I get back, I feel like I need to do some work since I didn’t earlier (border line guilt). I then end up getting a good 2 hours’ worth of work in at that point.

4. Keep your phone in another room

Again, I don’t do this all the time, but I have found that when I have work piling up or there’s a lot to get done and I need to focus on a task, I leave my phone on silent in another room. It works for me as an out of site out of mind tactic.

5. Take a walk regularly

When working from home, it’s easy to just be sitting at your desk or dining table all day. DON’T! Get up every so often and walk around the house, head to the kitchen, etc. Not only does this provide a break but it also means you’re getting some sort of movement in which you miss out on since you’re not longer commuting to work.
